Biography
Menno has over 25 years of experience as a tech & privacy lawyer. His practice concerns supporting clients regarding, amongst others:
(i) a variety of IT, Tech, SaaS and/or sourcing related agreements , both drafting, reviewing, negotiating and/or litigating;
(ii) regulatory ssues regarding Privacy (GDPR), Cybersecurity (DORA, NIS2) and/or artificial intelligence (EU AI Act); and/or
(iii) IP issues and/or challenges that come along with (new) technologies.
The following are some representative examples of matters and cases Menno dealt with: (i) drafting and reviewing ICT contracts, such as systems integration, licensing, developing, maintenance, consultancy, VAR, distribution and/or OEM agreements, (ii) drafting and reviewing B2B contracts such as general terms and condition, user (EULA) terms, website disclaimers, online terms of purchase, API terms and hosting agreements, (iii) drafting privacy-related agreements such as data processing agreements, (iv) advice on the processing of personal data, such as the allowability of direct marketing, pay-or-ok models, (v) advice on the intellectual property related aspects of information technology, such as software, open source, Internet and AI, and (vi) litigation regarding, inter alia, failed computerization and/or outsourcing projects, software infringement and license fees.
As a legal advisor, Menno has a pragmatic, hands-on approach, understanding the business of the client and working together with the client on a co-creation basis.
Examples of clients that Menno represents are healthcare solution providers, hospitality solution providers, identity verification solution providers, international traders, e-commerce platforms and tech investors.
Background
Before joining The Data Lawyers in January 2025, Menno started as a lawyer (IT& IP law) at the international law firm Baker & McKenzie for nearly ten years, subsequently he joined the niche law firm SOLV (specializing in Technology, Media & Communications) for twelve years. The last six years he worked as a tech & privacy lawyer at BDO Tax & Legal.
Menno studied both criminal and civil law in Leiden. Menno also finished apost-academic degree on Information Technology Law at the Grotius Academy in 2002.
Menno has an entrepreneurial mindset. He is cofounder of the Legal Techstart-ups VraagHugo and DocBLDR as well as co-founder of the incubator IncPlus and the related investment vehicle IncPlus Fund.
Menno is also a commissioner at the “Security of Things Fund” of Value Creation Capital (VCC).
Public speaker and writer
Menno is a frequent speaker at conferences and seminars. As an official “friend”, Menno also regularly acts as a Tech or Privacy expert on Business News Radio (BNR).
Menno provides various courses at private legal training institutions as well as for clients. Menno also has many legal publications to his name.
Menno is member of the editorial board of the Dutch journal on internet law (Tijdschrift voor Internetrecht), Co-Network leader of the JUC Network for Privacy Professionals, Editorial member of ITenRecht.nl, Advisory Board member of Pont Data &Privacy Web, and member of the training advisory board of the Tech Meets Law (TML) Academy.
Network and memberships
Menno has a broad (international) network in the field of Tech & Privacy Law. He is the chairman of the NVvIR (Nederlandse Vereniging voor ICT en recht – Netherlands Association for Information Technology and law). His other memberships include the Association for Privacy Law (VPR).
